Biography
Alex Chester-Iwata is an award-winning performer, writer, and cultural advocate advancing visibility for mixed Asian communities in the United States. With more than 35 years in entertainment, she began as a child actor and model, working with brands including Mattel, Ford, Disney, and McDonald’s, and appearing on networks such as ABC, NBC, CBS, TNT, and PBS. A seasoned stage performer, she has appeared in over 50 productions, including the Broadway production of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and was a member of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ girl group Dream.
As a mixed Japanese and Jewish American woman, Chester-Iwata’s career was shaped by exclusionary standards. She redirected that experience into advocacy, launching the blog MeSoHapa and contributing to outlets including HuffPost, where she elevated BIPOC voices and challenged inequities in the entertainment industry.
In 2017, she founded Hapa Mag, later rebranded in 2021 as Mixed Asian Media (MAM), now a leading platform for mixed AAPINH communities. MAM has been recognized by Nielsen and included in Mosaic: Themes in Asian American Studies. She also launched Mixed Asian Media Fest, a hybrid festival celebrating mixed AAPINH creatives.
She is the founder of Mixed Asian Day™, a national event series addressing gaps in representation during AAPINH Heritage Month. What began in New York City has expanded to Los Angeles and San Francisco, partnering with organizations such as Golden Guide and IW Group. Her work centers identity, adoptee voices, and intergenerational dialogue.
She also launched the Mixed Asian Social Club, with chapters in Washington, D.C. and New York City, creating spaces for connection and belonging.
Her honors include Asian Hustle Network’s Top 50 Unsung Heroes Award (2022), the Women of Distinction Award (2023), and the NAAAP Inspire Award (2025). She has spoken at organizations including Gold House, Tribeca Festival, TikTok, Amazon, and ACE NextGen.
Chester-Iwata serves on multiple boards, including ACE NextGen, the Philadelphia Asian American Film Foundation, and the New York Asian Film Festival, and holds advisory roles with The Lunar Collective and Asian American Dream.
Through storytelling and community building, she ensures mixed Asian identities are recognized and celebrated.
